For most students, the best time to take the SAT for the first time is the spring of junior year, with a retake in the fall of senior year if needed. That's College Board's own recommendation. It gives you time to prepare, a real score before you finalize your college list, and a second chance before application deadlines.

Dates and deadlines come from College Board's dates page; always confirm there before you register. Many students also take the SAT free on a school day through their school.

If you're a junior (Class of 2028)

  • Fall: take the PSAT/NMSQT if your school offers it. It's free practice and your National Merit entry (see PSAT vs SAT).
  • Winter: take a diagnostic practice test and start an 8–12 week plan.
  • Spring: first SAT in March, May or June 2027. March gives you the most room for a retake.
  • Summer: review your score against your college list and decide whether to retest.

If you're a senior (Class of 2027)

  • Early action or early decision: most early deadlines fall on November 1 or 15, so you generally need a score from October or earlier. Check each college's rules on whether a November score is accepted.
  • Regular decision: the December 5, 2026 SAT is College Board's "last test before college deadlines". Its scores are scheduled for release on December 18, and College Board sends scores to colleges about 10 days after release.
  • Register for December by November 20. After that, late registration runs until November 24.

How many times should you take it?

There's no limit on how many times you can take the SAT. College Board recommends at least twice, and many colleges superscore (take your best section scores across dates) or let you choose which scores to send. Two or three sittings is common; beyond that, gains usually come from better prep, not another attempt. Our superscoring guide explains the rules.

How much prep time to leave

Work backward from your test date: many students plan 8–12 weeks of steady practice, a few hours a week. If you're aiming for a big jump, give yourself the longer runway. Our SAT study schedule lays out 4-, 8- and 12-week versions.

Common questions

When should I take the SAT for the first time?

College Board recommends spring of junior year for a first sitting, with a possible retake in the fall of senior year. That leaves time to prepare, see your score and retest before most application deadlines.

What is the last SAT date for college applications?

For most regular decision deadlines in January, the December SAT is the last realistic date; College Board labels December 5, 2026 the last test before college deadlines. Early deadlines usually need an October or November score.

How far ahead do I need to register?

The regular registration deadline is about two weeks before test day, with a short late-registration window after it. For December 5, 2026, register by November 20 (late registration by November 24).
